U.S. highway weight restrictions for a container may vary from state-to-state. Check with the point/port of origin for more specific data on actual weight capacity.
As a general guideline, the following gross weight maximums should be adhered to in order to remain within the prescribed legal weight limits:
20' -
38,500 lbs (17,235 kgs)
40'/40' HQ -
43,500 lbs (19,730 kgs)
45' -
45,000 lbs (20,400 kgs)
Divide cubic inches by 1,728 and then by 35.32. (inch x 2.54 = cm) (cm x 0.39 = inch)
6,000 c. c. = 1 kg or 166 cu. in. = 1 lb
For international ocean shipment, 1 CBM is equivalent to 1,000 kg or 1 ton. However, for US inland traffic, 1 CBM is just 800 pound.
There are 2 kinds: 1. Formal Entry: Requires a continuous bond or a single entry bond. 2. Informal Entry: Does not require a bond and applies to most import merchandise with FOB value less than $2,500.
The manufacturer needs to be registered with FDA. Prior notice has to be sent to FDA at origin port.
